THE 2-FOOT ROOF EXTENSION: THE MODERN "DEEP EAVES"
In traditional Japanese buildings, roofs extended very deep (sometimes several meters) primarily to block rain and harsh sunlight. In modern minimalist architecture, however, the psychological and aesthetic functions of these extended eaves far outweigh their practical use:
A "Container" for Light and Shadow:
The 2-foot roof extension casts a moving shadow onto the wall and ground below. As the sun moves, the depth and length of this shadow shift, turning a flat exterior wall into a canvas that registers the passage of time.
A Psychological Sense of "Shelter":
Even if the space below is not enclosed, that extra 2 feet of overhead coverage creates a visual boundary. It gives people a psychological cue of being sheltered, inducing a sense of calm and stability.
